NPP refers petitions against Kennedy Agyapong to Disciplinary Committee for probe

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has referred former presidential aspirant and former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, to its National Disciplinary Committee following a series of petitions accusing him of making public comments that undermine party unity.

The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council on Thursday, June 25.

The disciplinary committee has been given two weeks to investigate the petitions and submit its recommendations to the party leadership.

The NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, said the party’s leadership unanimously agreed that all petitions concerning Mr. Agyapong should be referred to the disciplinary body.

“The decision was that all of these petitions must be referred to the National Disciplinary Committee,” Mr. Boakye said.

“Let’s manage for the next two weeks, and when we receive the report and a decision is made, it will be communicated appropriately,” he added.

The petitions stem from a series of recent public comments by Mr. Agyapong, in which he criticised some decisions taken by the NPP administration while it was in government.

Among the issues that generated controversy were his remarks on the failure of the Akufo-Addo administration to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region despite significant public investment in the project.

Mr. Agyapong also stirred controversy after warning that he could “spill the beans” on alleged wrongdoing within the party if attempts were made to silence him.

His comments have divided opinion within the NPP, with some members arguing that the statements risk undermining ongoing efforts to rebuild the party and restore public confidence following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

Several party members subsequently petitioned the leadership, contending that the former lawmaker’s public utterances could deepen internal divisions at a time when unity is considered critical.

The referral to the National Disciplinary Committee marks the latest development in the NPP’s efforts to address internal disagreements as it prepares for future political contests.
